the project
The "Go Ray" project intends to undertake a journey accross oceans and lands, time and space with memories of the people who lived, are living or just passed through the places where the slave trade left its mark. Starting in Salvador de Bahia (the most african city of Brazil),in september 2001, the journey may take the artist and the viewers to Goree, the departure port.Here some 250 pairs of used shoes collected on the streets of salvador de Bahia, may bring home memories, not only of those who when but also of those they met, ennemis and friends... who shared their lives overseas.Then the shoes may undertake another journey to the Americas, bringing home, memories of the land of some of the ancestors.And the journey may be followed by another one... |
Goree
The island of Goree in Senegal drew its fame from the slave trade. Today, thousands of people from around the world go there in order to remember."Goree" is also the title of the environment that is created with a boat full of shoes collected from the streets of Salvador de Bahia in Brazil (a former destination for the slaves) and the video "go ray" |
